Mahomes began his journey at Whitehouse High School in Texas, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts as a senior and was named Maxpreps Male Athlete of the Year for 2013–2014. After being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB draft, he committed to Texas Tech University.
